Friday, March 5th, 2010

Mental health is the capacity to live harmoniously in a changing environment; to face and solve one’s problems in a realistics manner; to accept the inevitable and to understand and accept one’s own shortcomings as well as the shortcomings of the others.

Mental health is a matter of degree. There is no hard and fast line that separates health from illness. It is not a simple matter to divide the population into two distinct groups-those who should be institutionalized and those who should not be. Many o us at one time or another exhibit traits and pattern of behavior which, if accentuated and continuous, would necessitate psychiatric care.

While it is convenient to define physical and mental health as if they are separate entities, complete physical health is impossible in the absence of mental health. Conversely, though mental health can be maintained in spite of physical ill health, it may still be affected by the serious added environment stress comes from prolonged ill-health.

Owing to industry’s impact on the individual as a worker and as a member of the family unit, it is in business and industry where a great deal of emphasis is placed on mental health.
